IDPA at the St. John’s Rod & Gun Club
The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) was established in the United States in 1996, and is the governing body for IDPA competition, a handgun-centric shooting sport based on simulated self-defense scenarios. The format was designed to be enjoyable to all shooters of all skill levels, with a premium put on the social interaction and camaraderie of the members. Today, it is the fastest growing shooting sport in the USA with over 300 affiliated clubs in all 50 states hosting weekly and monthly competitions, and with membership from over 50 foreign nations, including of course Canada.
IDPA involves the use of practical equipment including full charge service ammunition to solve simulated “real world” self-defense scenarios. Shooters are required to use practical handguns and concealed carry holsters that are truly suitable for self-defense use. No “competition only” equipment is permitted, since the main goal is to test the skill and ability of an individual, not his equipment or gamesmanship.
Established at the St. John’s Rod & Gun Club in March 2010, IDPA Newfoundland & Labrador (IDPANL) is the affiliated local section of IDPA Canada (which, in turn, is the regional representative of IDPA International), and the first Canadian provincial club to be organized east of Ontario.
Among other things, IDPANL seeks to promote within the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador a shooting sport that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounters; to promote a better knowledge and appreciation on the part of individuals of the citizens of the safe handling and proper care of firearms, as well as improved marksmanship; and to promote the development of the characteristics of honesty, good fellowship, self-discipline, team play, and self-reliance, which are the essentials of good sportsmanship.
Matches typically require the use of a service type pistol or revolver of 9x19mm/.38 Special or larger caliber. Almost any “off the shelf” handgun will be suitable for IDPA matches, allowing individuals to participate with minimal investment. Matches are typically held at Range C on every third Sunday, with the regular schedule posted on the SJRGC website. We also conduct “three gun” (handgun, rifle and shotgun) matches on a fairly regular basis, and have also hosted larger annual events such as the Zombie Multi-Gun Shoot, and in this upcoming season, a Cowboy Shoot.
Annual membership in IDPANL is currently $25.00, with a match fee of $5.00. It is also required that applicants obtain and maintain a current membership with IDPA International, which allows participation in all sanctioned IDPA matches worldwide.
